Why Understanding Shipping Types Matters

When using Omnivore / eBay LINK to sell on eBay Australia, setting up your shipping correctly is essential. eBay requires certain business policy configurations, and mistakes can lead to your listings being removed.

To comply, you must have:

  • A default shipping policy

  • The default policy must be named “basic” (all lowercase) within your eBay account.

You also need to complete your Business Policies in eBay (Shipping, Payment, Returns) before connecting them in Omnivore. See this article for more details.

If you have existing eBay Business policies, you cannot rename them to fit Omnivore's policy requirement as it will likely cause an error. See this article for more details.

Types of eBay Shipping Supported via Omnivore

When configuring your shipping in Omnivore / eBay LINK, you can choose from the following shipping types:

Calculated Shipping:

  • Costs are based on weight and dimensions (width, height, length).

  • Only Australia Post is supported for calculated shipping.

  • eBay will use either the actual weight or volumetric weight, whichever is greater.

  • Make sure your products in your eCommerce store include accurate dimensions — Omnivore imports them.

  • See this article for more details.

Weight-Based Shipping Using Rate Tables:

  • Allows you to set different postage costs for up to 100 regions in Australia and up to 40 rate tables per account.

  • Rate tables are weight-based, so the weight you send to eBay matters.

  • You can use any carrier for rate tables — it’s not limited to Australia Post.

  • You can define handling cut-off times, same-day handling, and different costs for Standard vs Express delivery.

  • See this article for more details.

Free Shipping:

  • Offer free shipping for all or selected listings.

  • Many sellers increase their product price in Omnivore to absorb shipping costs.

  • See this article for how to set up free shipping on all products.

  • See this article for how to set up free shipping on specific products.

  • See this article for how to set up free shipping over a certain value.

Flat Rate Shipping:

  • Charge a fixed rate for Standard and/or Express delivery.

  • You could also achieve a flat-rate effect using a promotion to increase the product price.

Combined Shipping:

  • Lets you set rules for orders with multiple items: flat charge, extra cost per additional item, or free shipping over a minimum order.

  • See this article for more details.

NEW - Local Pickup Postage Option:

  • Supported in some cases.
  • On eBay, this service is called “Local Pickup”, and in Omnivore, it’s AU_Pickup.
  • Payment on pickup is not allowed — buyers must still pay immediately through eBay.

Next Steps

  • Carefully read the article on eBay Business Policies (Shipping, Payment, Returns) and ensure these are set up correctly.

  • Decide which shipping method(s) you want to offer based on how you fulfill orders and who your customers are.
