Before You Set Up Omnivore

Account Requirements

  • You must have a Trade Me account with a username and password.
  • You must have both:
    • Trade Me Ping (for receiving payments), and Afterpay. These must be set up before you can start selling through Omnivore.
  • Your Trade Me account must be set to In Trade before listing items. Instructions are available on Trade Me.
  • A Trade Me Store is optional but offers benefits such as Was/Now pricing and increased brand visibility.
  • If migrating from Tradevine or My Products, read the migration article first.
  • During setup, you’ll need to authorise Omnivore to access your Trade Me account. If not completed, Omnivore will prompt you in the Dashboard.
  • Sellers in Australia must have a New Zealand bank account or be approved by Trade Me as an international seller.
  • Your listing allowance determines how many products you can sell. Multi‑variant items count as one listing (e.g., one shirt with four colours = one listing).

Key Omnivore Settings

Navigate to Settings > Trade Me > General & Shipping.  Common configuration items include:


Trade Me Connection

  • Click Authorise Now to connect Omnivore to Trade Me.
  • Log in to your Trade Me account when prompted.

Product Description Template

  • Customise your product description layout as needed.

Tax Settings

  • Configure how tax is handled between Omnivore and your eCommerce store. See the tax article for details.

Exclude Products

  • Exclude products based on brand, title, keywords, or store categories.

Orders

  • Use the Do not import orders before this date field to prevent older Trade Me orders from importing.

Shipping Templates

  • All Trade Me shipping configurations must be created within Omnivore.
  • At least one shipping template is required before you go live.

Check Your Trade Me Settings

Selling Account

Review the Trade Me requirements for existing listings and store accounts.

Listing Products

  • Assign a Trade Me category to each product you want to list.
  • Products without a mapped category will not list.
  • Exclude unwanted products individually or with rules.
  • Trade Me restricts some product types. Check their list of banned and restricted items.

Product Pricing

  • Use promotions to adjust pricing across selected products.

International Sellers

If your store currency is not NZD:


How pricing works:

  • Omnivore takes your store’s base‑currency product price.
  • Local taxes are removed.
  • The tax‑exclusive amount is converted into NZD.
  • Orders on Trade Me are converted back into your store’s currency.

You can:

  • Set custom exchange rates under Settings > Currencies

  • Add a mandatory offshore‑seller disclaimer to each listing:

    Go to Settings > Trade Me > General and add to the Description Template:

    $detailed_description 
    This item is sold by <your store name>, an offshore business located in <your location>, and may incur NZ customs duty or tax. Find out more at http://trade.me/whatsmyduty

Stock Buffer

If you carry low stock, set a stock buffer under Settings > Administration > Product Import to reduce overselling.

Shipping Setup

Trade Me supports options such as:

  • Free shipping
  • Multiple shipping methods per product
  • Weight‑based shipping
  • Free shipping over a certain order value

If your products require size charts:

  1. Create a product group (Products > Product Groups)
  2. Go to Products > Product Actions > Create Additional Image
  3. Upload a publicly accessible JPG image

Checklist Before You Start Selling

Your Omnivore dashboard will display “Setup” until Trade Me activates your Start Selling status. Make sure you have:

  • Fully set up your Trade Me account
  • Mapped products to Trade Me categories
  • Created required shipping templates
  • Excluded unwanted products
  • Checked Listing Errors
  • Reviewed dashboard warnings
  • Familiarised yourself with Trade Me fees and Trade Me Account Requirements.

Once everything is complete, submit a support ticket requesting activation. Omnivore will coordinate final checks with Trade Me.
