As of April 2024 the information below is current for Shopify on the topic of refunding orders.
Refunds were always a manual process whereby the seller had to manually cancel/refund orders which included the seller manually updating the order to reflect the refund in each system.
Development completed in 2024 implemented the function for Omnivore to update refunds from Shopify to eBay and Amazon (need to confirm Amazon). This meant a seller could set an order to refunded/cancelled in Shopify and it would flow to eBay.
Sparesbox uses this function.
For it to work sellers must be opted in by Support/Admin.
Settings - eBay - General: Orders - Use eBay's api .... has to be ticked.
By default this is not ticked, its opt in ONLY at the time this article is being written.
Fern will address when this function will be turned on by default.
Refunds from the eComm Store are only possible for Shopify sellers at this time.
